AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.
NORTHERN MATCH. VISITORS ALL OUT FOR 105. A DRAWN GAME. (Reuter.) Received June 3. 1t.13 a.m. LONDON, .lun- i. The Australian cricketers this morning resumed their first innings in Ihc match against North of England. Taylor (12) and Mailey (0) the two not out men continued hatting. Jupp and Larwood opened the attack. Mailey received a ball on his pads in attempting to turn it to leg. Jupp was howling short. He was displaced, after one over by Root, who howled on the leg theory. He had Taylor in difficulties when tiie latter attempted to play the balls, hut more often Taylor elected lo leave them alone. Larwood on a harder wicket developed a pace which was probably faster than that of Gregory, lie kept a good length, and had Macartney beaten three times in succession. Taylor was never comfortable facing Root. He al tempted to drive one to the boundary, but it was held at mid-on. Received June 5, 1.5 p.m. LONDON, June 4. The Australians had not experienced Root before, liis line of attack was new to most of them. He is a medium fast, consistently good length, pitching the balls mostly to the leg slump, with leg breaks in such a way that the batsmen must play him. There was always the risk of being bowled in trying to drive and the tendency is to play back and await a loose one. Root, who is no novice, knows the batsmen arc sure to try glances or let the hall hit his- bat and risk cocking up easy catches. Therefore lie lias four fieldsmen close to leg—namely, one silly deep, one line, one square, and one just outside square. Every now and then he sends a hall from off stump, then a similar one with an ofTbreak, thus batsmen attempting to cut and drive oCtcn find that the ball lias whipped back and taken the leg slump, or else they put it up to Hie slips.
