NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS
PROFITS MADE IN APRIL. ,By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. A working profit of £251,407 is shown by the Railway Department’s accounts for the first period of the new financial year, from April 1 to May 1, or 32 days. The corresponding return last year, which covered only 25 days, showed a working profit of £152,303. Tho extra days arc, however, not alone sufficient to explain the great increase, part of which is probably due lo Ihe heavy passenger traffic during the closing weeks of the Dunedin Exhibition.
The gross earnings for the month were £773,370 and the expenses £520,063. Of the former £403,500 was derived from North Island railways, £318,042 from ihe South Island lines, and £50707 from miscellaneous services. The corresponding expenditure was £2 74,852, £220,034, and
£20,070. Ttic working profit on ihe North island railways was £ 125,70 S ; that from the South Island railways £92,008; while the excess of receipts from miscellaneous services was £30,001. ’I tie figure shown for the Souui Island is the highest for any period for several years, though, if allowance is made for the extra days, it is barely as high as that for the last four weeks of March, 192 3, when the working profit was £89,954.
