NORTHLAND TUNNEL.
HUGE WASTE OF MONEY. MR R. SEMPLE'S PERSISTENCE.; (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The three Wellington daily news*» papers managed to write leading articles on the Northland tunnel scandal without mentioning the fact thab the exposure of the methods of tha Council was mainly due to the per-< sistence of Mr Robert Semple. Tho Dominion, however, has made amends for its omission by saying what tho citizens are thinking of their muni-« cipal authority. "The report shows,'' it states, "that owing to a serious and Inexcusable failure of organisation there has been a huge waste of public money, and that no remedy for this state of affairs has yet been applied. The resolution implies that the council has decided, now that the facts have been made public, to fold its hands and hope that tho time of trouble will soon be over. As matters stand the city is given no assurance whatever that the council intends to overhaul and reorganise tha city engineering department, much; less that it proposes to deal with this reorganisation as a matter of imperative urgency. The council's idea of duty seems to be to sleep at its post and drift with the tide." In due course, no doubt, the council will proceed to rearrange its staff. The ratepayers' turn will come when they have an opportunity to rearrange their; Council. j
