GIVES HIMSELF UP.

MISSING FOR TWO MONTHS. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Friday. Ernest Taniwlni Sutherland, a halfcaste Maori, who had been wanted by the police on a charge of the attempted murder of his wife, Rangi Sutherland, at Awahuri, surrendered himself to Hie police at a late hour last evening, after sending a message stating that he was to be found at a certain address, at Palmerston North, lie expressed sorrow at what he had done and said he desired to give the police no further trouble.

Sutherland appeared at the Police Court tilts morning on a charge of attempted murder, and was remanded until April 30, with a prospect of a further remand.

It will he remembered that on Hie evening preceding the Awahuri incident Sutherland was unsuccessful in persuading his wife to cancel separation proceedings instituted by her. 11c then left the house of his father-in-law, (Mr Drummond), where Ids wife resided. About midnight Drummond awoke to find Hie house on lire, as a result of sacks soaked in kerosene being placed beneath and set aiighl. Drummond told his wife, Airs Sutherland, and the latter’s three children to shelter in a shed while lie tried to pull the sacks away and’extinguish the blaze. Sutherland then reappeared, and allegedly struck Drummond with a garden implement. He again disappeared and then Went to the shod where the women and children wore . sheltering, and allegedly indicted a serious wound on (he shoulder of his wife with a knife or an axe, and made off. It is alleged also that he was responsible for injuries received by Mrs Drummond, who, however, quickly recovered.

Mrs Sutherland is still in hospital, but is now well on the road to recovery.
