MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.
BETTS COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Tuesday. The inquest regarding the death of .Joseph Claude Pearce from injuries received on the. night' or .March fi, when his cycle was struck by a passing car which did not slop on the Cherlsey Road, was continued to-day. Joseph P. Bells, a motor mechanic, said they round Pearce on the road. Witness diil not think lie could have, hit deceased Witness did not I ell Ihe police because he was not sure he had hit Pearce. Later he gave a statement to Ihe police. The coroner found that Pearce died as the. result of being hit. by a motorcar driven by Bells.
Bells then appeared before a Justice, or Ihe peaco charged wilh negligent driving so as lo cause Ihe death Jf Pearce, thereby commilling man slaughter. Bells pleaded not guilly. reserved his defence and was eomnrl--1.. 11 for trial in Ihe Supreme Court at Cl'.rislchurch.
