UNIQUE DINNER PARTY.
FEEDING THE PAUPERS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.j LONDON, March 12. A dinner party, possibly unique, was held in the People's Palace in the Mile End Road, when General Booth dined with a thousand "down and outs" from homes throughout London. Waitresses, .as trim and dainty as any in the West End, served very excellent food, such as the majority of the guests had not tasted for years. The party was not without its pathetic side; almost every human emotion was exhibited on the faces in the luckless thousand who ate. Old men, (older still because of despair), young men who had forgotten how to smile, realised for the first time in years, the pleasantness of a meal served with scemlincss and decency. Many fumbled awkwardly with their napkins, and more than one wiped a iear from his eye. After the first course there were merry murmurs of conversation, and towards the end mc.ny again found smiles and laughter.
