THE COURAGE OF WOMEN.
j GREATER THAN MEN'S.
\ That there are extraordinary re- ' serves of courage in woman which have hardly been properly utilised is quite evident. Indeed, it is not toi much to say that she has, as a rule. more moral courage than a man (writes a correspondent in the "Westminster Gazette"). When does a male householder "stand up to" the cook, much less give her notice to quit? He will go on patiently enduring the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune rather than "have it out" with that formidable member of his staff. Who does not know helpless bachelors and widowers who have endured kitchen tyranny to the very end? Whereas Woman, who has a nice eye to the shortcomings of her own sex, is not to be intimidated by cook, or any other domestic. i In shopping woman shows a mark!ed superiority over man in moral courage. She is not to be "ru«hed" into buying things she docs not want, or which do not "match"-.because they are 'offered by a young person with shingled golden hair and provocative glances. Indeed, she is often not above bargaining, a process which is frankly revolting to the average cultivated Englishman. Such as these make abject shoppers, ready to take, anything that is offered them and to pay the highest price. If accompanied by a wife or daughter they ocasionally escape unshorn, but alone they are help- • less victims, all for want of a dash of i moral courage. Surgeons and denj lists will tell you that their feminine patients usually show far more moral courage than men. But it is in her mode of dressing that Woman shows the greatest moral courage. The present startling fashions
which exclude all superfluous clothing, are a case in point. What man would have the nerve to wear the equivalent of a knecrlength skirt, and a shorn, cropped head? Why, he hesitates and argues about the width of a braid o.i his garments, while excellent citizens have been black-balled at clubs on account of the colour or shape of their cravats. Man's evening dress has al-' tercel very little for fifty years, while woman's alters every five months. It is true that man now shaves his face, while woman shaves her head:'only in this matter do they show concerted action.
