TOKIO, January 27

Viscount Kato, whose retirement from the Prime Ministership of Japan was announced yesterday, died to-day.

The Cabinet had just appointed Mr Wakatsuki to succeed Viscount Kato, owing to the latter's illness.

TOKIO, Jan. 28

Viscount Kato developed pneumonia on Wednesday night. He was untiring in his devotion to duty, despite medical advice, and this resulted in overstrain, leaving him no reserve strength to 'combat his illness. Cabinet formally resigned.

Mr Wakatsuki succeeds Viscounl Kato in the Presidency of the Kensa Kai or Government Party.
