Whist at ancnor In Auckland Harbour the Federal Line steamer, Kent, 8650 tons, was the scene of an outbreak of fire, and considerable difficutty was experienced in subduing the conflagration, about 1500 tons of cargo loaded at Liverpool and Glasgow for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin being destroyed. The Harbour Board’s Firefloat was quickly on the scene of the outbreak, and did valuable work In quelling the flames, while later it was decided to tow the Kent to the Queen’s Wharf, where the Auckland Fire Brigade eventually extinguished the fire after a strenuous fight. The illustration shows the Kent almost obscured by the dense volumes of smoke, about to be tied up to the Queen’s Wharf. The Firefloat is seen alongside the steamer.
