TE AWAMUTU ORPHANS.

AN ENJOYABLE EVENING.

The Tc Awamutu Orphans' Club's evening on Saturday was very well attended, and was most successful. Bro. 11. A. Swarbrick was in the chair. Proceedings opened with the National Anthem.

The chairman gave an interesting discourse on his experiences in the study of law; and particularly of some during the time ho was in England after the armistice. . lie emphasised in many ways the wonderful influence the English common law has on the law of all nations; and, further, ho considered 'this influence one of the main reasons the Empire had held together so .well. Before commencing the programme for the evening, the chairman moved a vote of sympathy with Bro. W. McGivern, in the recent loss of his father, and also with the relatives of Bro. Bribner, last year's president of the Matamata Club. This was carried in the usual way. The programme was as follows: — Orchestra, "Constellation March"; club quartette, Messrs Aldridge, Cullum, Stallard, and Walker—songs, " The Old Banjo " and " Shine, Shine Moon," and an ode for adoption by the club, a Maori chant; Bro. M. Hayward, trombone solo; Bro. 11. Andrew, songs; orchestra; "The Caliph of Bagdad"; Bro. Osborne, violin solo; Bro. Stampford, song "Caro Mio "; and a selection from the orchestra closed a very en- : joyablc evening's entertainment.

Next evening will lie members' wives' evening, and the Onehunga Club is paying a visit on September 5.
