YOUNG MAN IN COURT.

DEALINGS WITH A CHEQUE. INFORMATION DISMISSED. A smart, well-dressed young man ‘whose name was ordered to be suppressed appeared before Mr H. A. 'Young, S-M., at the Lower Court yesterday on a charge of obtaining a cheque for £7 from A. F. Meldrum, with intent to defraud, by representing that he had a hanking account at the Bank of New Zealand at Ngaruawahia. Mr Stace appeared for accused, Detective Culloty prosecuting. Alexander Franols Meldrum, solicitor, Hamilton, stated that accused called at his office and consulted him about a motor agency about which they had had a previous discussion. Accused asked for a cheque for £7, giving him to understand that he had an account at Ngaruawahia, and witness gave accused a cheque for £7 on the Bank of New Zealand, Hamilton. On telephoning the bank at Ngarua'wahla, witness learnt that aocused had no account. He rang up aocused that evening and told him he would give him until 10 a.m. the following morning to pay. ' He did not keep his appointment, but the money had been refunded.

Mr Stace explained that there was no need for aoeused’s action as he had a telegram from London that money was being sent to him. Unfortunately It had not come, but accused concluded that it had. Accused foolishly had not shown Mr Meldrum the telegram. If he had, the trouble would have been averted. Crass-exanrfned by Detective Colloty, accused said when he got the cheque from Mr Meldrum he cashed it. He denied that he was in the habit of: borrowing money. He had only borrowed £3 from the licensee of the Walpa Hotel at Ngaruawahia on one occasion. The last occasion on which he had money In the Bank of New Zealand at Ngaruawahia was about two months ago. His Worship, in view of the circumstances, dismissed the Information.
