MURDERED MISSIONARY.
CHINESE OFFICER PARDONED. AN AMERICAN PROTEST. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) WASHINGTON, January 17. The United States has lodged a vigorous protest to China against the pardon by the President, Tsaou Kun, of General Chang Ching Yao, formerly military governor of Hunan, who was responsible for the murder of the Rev. Reimert, an American missionary in June, 1920. The protest emphasises that the pardon is a breach of faith, as the Chinese Government had held the general guilty of murder, and declares it will make it difficult for the United States again to place credence in any assurances which the Chinese may give. Doubt is expressed, however, whether the pardon will be revoked, and it is regarded a s more serious, coming as it does at a time when numerous outrages upon foreigners in China have been reported. Official circles are i very much disturbed at the situation, I which is considered extremely unsafe for Western people.
