EXPLOSION ON A TRAIN.
FIREMAN SERIOUSLY HURT. BLOWN OFF THE ENGINE. By Telegraph-—Prtss Association. ASHBURTON. Saturday. To be blown from a railway engine of a-traiu travelling at full speed was the experience of Swanson, a fireman on the last of three special trains convoying 3000 Christchureh bakers to Timaru for their annual picnic. The accident occurred between Buvnham and Rolleston. Swanson was stoking when a terrific explosion in the furnace blew him out of tho engine. The driver was also slightly injured and somewhat dazed, but recovered, and hastened to apply the brakes, which stopped the train. A relief party hurried back and picked up Swanson, who was burnei and otherwise in a bad way. He was conveyed in the guard's van to the Ashburton Hospital, after the train had stopped at Rakai-a for first-aid by Dr. Sheffield. The explosion, it is conjectured, was due to a detonator having accidentally been left in the coal used. A preliminary examination of Swanson's injuries at the hospital indicate a severe fracture of the skull. He is still unconscious, and his condition is very serious.
