FIRE AT CLAUDELANDS.

MOTOR SHED DESTROYED. STORED FURNITURE BURNED. A fire broke out at 1.45 p. m.to-day in a motor shed adjoining a bouse in I-leaphy Terrace, occupied by Mr F. Rowe, and owned by. Mr J. McLennan. The fire, the origin'of which is a mystery, enveloped the shed very quickly, and imminent danger threatened the house. The Fire Brigade, however, was quickly on the scene and although unable to save the shed, prevented the house from taking fire, the only damage to the residence being a broken window pane. Mr and Mrs Rowe are recent arrivals to the town, and the shed contained some valuable furniture, all of which was lost. An adjoining motor shed on Mr R. Pilkington's property was badly charred. MISHAP TO FIREMAN. A narrow escape from serious injury was the experience of a fireman, Mr J. St- Clair, who as he was jumping off his motor cycle at the scene of the fire, was struck by a car driven by Mr Campbell Macintyre, mine surveyor, Taupiri. The car passed over the Are/nan's body, and spectators were horrified by what appeared to be a fatal accident, as St. Clair lay motionless. When carried into a neighbouring house, however, he quickly recovered, and as far as can be estimated lie 'has not been seriously injured, though it is possible that a rib has been fractured.
