THE MAIL SERVICE.

TO BE SPEEDED UP. ACROSS AMERICA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Monday. The Postal Department has made an arrangement for the more rapid transit of mails via the United States to and from Now Zealand. The Post Office at Chicago will advise the Resident Agent in San Francisco of the departure of mails from England. To facilitate despatch from the Pacific seaboard mails will bo forwarded from New York by the Vancouver or San Francisco route, whichever gives better despatch. Mails from New York for England will not now be kept back 2i hours for an American steamer In preference lo a foreign boat. When mails arc transhipped at Honolulu letlers from America will be included, but other classes of mail matter will still come to Sydney, it is expected thai these alterations will accelerate mails between San Francisco and London, both ways.
