MATAMATA COUNTY CLERKSHIP.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I notice in a recent issue of your paper that another, but luckily a futile, attempt has been made to move the office of the Matamata County clerk to Tirau, so that it would be in the same building as that of the county engineer. Knowing what it would mean to our present clerk, either an intolerable amount of travelling between Cambridge and Tirau or, worse still, that he would have to live at Tirau, a typical N.Z. country township, but only in the making—the social life of Tirau cannot be compared with that of Cambridge—let us think what sacrifice that would entail. Those of us here, for years, quite understand. If the councillor moving for the change will look beneath the surface of what he is doing in what he believes to be in the interest of the ratepayers', he will observe he will cause no end of trouble. It behoves the Council to keep one they know to be a first-class officer and allow matters to be as they are, even if the ratepayers’ interests are sacrificed a weeny bit, for I am sure the clerk will make it up to the councillors, if not to the ratepayers too, by personal attention and courtesy.—l am, etc., CONSERVATIVE.
