N.Z. TRADE RETURNS.
BIG INCREASE OF IMPORTS. EXCESS OF EXPORTS, By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Government statistician's figures disclose the fact that imports into New Zealand for the eight months ended. August 31, 1923, totalled £24,648,012, an increase of approximately £6,000,000 over the corresponding period of last year. The increase is general, although the greatest change is evident in such items as motor vehicles, wearing apparel, boots and shoes, cotton and woollen piece goods, and oils. The exports, totalling £35.531,590, are greater by nearly £3,000,000 than last year. Butter and cheese are chiefly responsible for the improved position.
Despite the advance recorded in imports, which is due no doubt to greater business confidence, the exports show a surplus of over £11,000,000. Such a position, even when such faofors as "invisible" imports and exports arc taken into consideration, must be regarded as eminentiiv satisfactory. Imports, which were at a low ebb In 1924 'and the greater part of last year, have maintained a uniform high level for. the past twelve months or more.
