PISTOLS IN A PRISON.
DESPERADOES FIGHT. IMPOTENCE OF THE OFFICIALS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW YORK, October 3. An unsuccessful attempt by three convict desperadoes to escape from the State Penitentiary' at Eddysville, Kentuck, resulted in the death of one of the guards, and serious injury to three others. The desperadoes, using automatic pistols which had been smuggled into, the prison, fired at the keepers while GOOO prisoners were at breakfast. The latter, however, refused to join in the outbreak and the mutineers rushed to the main entrance, but the presence of reserve guards caused them to change their course. They dashed into an empty dining hall, where they erected barricades against rifle Arc, which Was continued all day. The desperadoes are still holding out. Nobody knows the quantity • of ammunition the mutineers have obtained. • The prison, officials admit the helplessness of the situation, and hope that hunger will force capitulation. Otherwise, the officials declare they may resort to bombing or the use of tear gas.
