A SAVAGE ASSAULT.
TROUBLE ON THE MARAMA. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A dispute arose on the Marama on Tuesaay evening regarding the ownership of a hurricane lamp which had been removed from an alleyway by firemen of the vessel. The boatswain, Arthur Cross, went to the firemen's quarters to inquire concerning the lamp, and was struck over the head with a bottle, and when Hie bottle broke was jabbed in the face with the shattered neck of the bottle, lie was assisted by three seamen, and after a scuffle managed to get clear. A fireman named Frederick Van Lume appeared before Mr E. Page in the Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with assaulting Cross, and was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for'what the bench described as a "savage assault." The evidence showed that there had been trouble betwen the seamen and firemen on the vessel for some lime. The lamp was put in an alleyway for the safety of the crew when tiie electric lights were not on.
