. TAUPIRI FARMERB FINED. RAILWAY'S RESPONSIBILITY. Further prosecutions under the' Stock Act were heard at the Magistrate'?. Cpurt, Hamilton, to-day, when two farmers, N, Ham and A. Hastings, were charged with railing stock from Taupiri, a tick-infested area, to a nonaffected area without having first obtained a permit Both defendants pleaded ignorance of the regulations, and stated that the Railway Department had accepted the stock without mentioning. anything about a permit being required. One defendant said that the official on duty at Taupiri at the time had actually told him no permit at all was required as long as the Agricultural Department was notified. His Worship expressed surprise that one department of the Government ' should not assist another department better, and suggested to Stock Inspector Alexander, who prosecuted, that the Railway Department should be informed of the matter. Each defendant would be fined the minimum penalty of £5 and court costs 7s.
