UNEMPLOYED MARRIED MEN.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l think it is time something was done in the town to improve the unemployment of married men with families dependent on them. I have heard of one case this week of a married man with a family dependent on him being discharged from his job on the Council drainage works and a single man taken on in his place. Now, sir, I would like to ask the public if they think this Is giving a fair deal to the married man with dependents. I have been told that the returned soldiers’ Poppy Day funds have been given to the Borough Council to enable them to give employment to returned soldiers who are married and have dependents at 10s per day. Now, sir, is this fair? Why not put the 6ingle man on 10s per day and the married man on the IGs per day work? Why do the Council still persist in employing single men instead of married men, of which there are so many out of work? This man has had to apply for relief from the Mayor’s fund, being unable to And any work in Hamilton. — I am, etc., FAIR PLAY. Claudelands, Aug. 9, 1923.
