GRADING PORTS.
A NAPIER REQUEST.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A deputation waited on the Minister of Agriculture with a request that Napier should be made a grading port for dairy produce. The deputation consisted of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, the Napier'Harbour Board, and farming interests, accompanied by Sir Hunter L. McllvrideDr. Reakes pointed out that there were grading ports and other ports in the Dominion. The proposal means that Home boats spend a greater period on the New Zealand coast. The question of reduced freights was under discussion, but there was no likelihood of a reduction.
The deputation said if Napier were made a grading port it would save railage to Wellington. The Minister replied that the question of reducing railway freights was under consideration. The Government wished to help the Hawke's Bay producers, b*ut had to consider the Dominion as a whole. ■ It would not do anything until it saw what was happening in connection with overseas freight, reduced railway freights and the Dairy Control Bill.
