AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. United Press Association. Received Tune 23, 11.30 a.m. SYDNEY, June 23. Five fires’ broke out within the spao of 24 hours last night, and kept thi. brigade busy. The biggest blaze oc- i curred at tiie Victoria barracks, where the gun-harness room was destroyed, and also four big guns. The damage: v to the barracks is estimated at £BOOO. The coal conference has adjourned until next week. It is understood that both sides are considering proposals submitted, and there is every prospect of the differences being adjusted. Major-General Leslrange Eames, addressing the Society of St. George, outlined a scheme for settling British men and women in the Northern Territory by a combination of the Government, private enterprise, and white; settlers, lie contends that the scheme would be practicable if the Government wilt guarantee a portion of the money for the construction of railways, as ■ the British Government did when therailways were constructed in parts of India. MELBOURNE, June 23. Hon. S. M. Bruce informed a deputation from the Empire Development Union that the most important imme-: diate task was to educate the people of Britain and Australia to the necessity of an economic policy applicable to the whole Empire. . y In the House, of Representatives Hon.
