U.S.A. IMMIGRATION LAW.
DEMAND ON SHIPPING COMPANIES. TO MAINTAIN OWN STATIONS. UNSUITABILITY OF ELLIS ISLAND. Australian and N.Z. Gable Assn. Received June 23, 10.30 a.m. WASHINGTON, June 21. The Government has, under advice, adopted a plan requiring Trans-Atlantic Steamship Companies to maintain at their own .expense proper immigrationstations, and ■ the United States Commissioner has requested the SolicitorGeneral to rule regarding the legality of the plan. The move conics as the result of criticism in the British Parliament over the treatment of immigrants on Ellis Island. The Immigration Commissioner (Mr Husband) made a statement admitting that Ellis Island was' unsuitable for the detention of persons other than the immigrant type. It was not jntended for cabin passengers, but since the quota law it has been necessary to detain all classes. Hence the innumerable complaints.
