MORPETH BY-ELECTION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, June 22. The by-election for Morpeth, necessitated by the death of Mr John Cairns, Labour M.P., resulted in. the return of the Labour candidate, Mr R. Smillle, formerly president of the Miners’ Federation. The voting was:— R. Smillie (Labour) 20,053 F, C. Thornborough (Liberal) 13,087 Majority 6,966 The voting at the general election in November, 1922, was:— J. Cairns (Labour) 15,025 F. C. T’hornborough (Liberal) 10.007 C. S. Short (Conservative) .. 6,045
