TAXI RANKS.
WHERE SHOULD THEY BE? COMMITTEE TO REPORT. Messrs Ellis and Burnand and Drs. Beveridge and Green protested to the Hamilton Borough Council last evening, against the road in front of their premises being used as a taxi stand, and suggested that taxi-cars might be parked in Bryce Street. - Cr. J. McKinnon considered that the Council should take into' consideration the question of refusing to issue any more taxi-drivers' licenses. At present there was no room on the main street ranks Jot more cars, and it was little- use pushing men into side-streets where, perhaps, they would only make a few shillings a week. Cr. O. Farrer agreed that the Council should refuse further licenses on the grounds that there was no room for them on the ranks. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. R. Fow) said the question was a big one, and he moved its reference to a committee. Cr. W. C. Rollett considered that to park taxis in front of business premises was detrimental to those businesses. He thought they would have to consider whether they could not establish ranks in the centre of the streets, as in many other places. His Worship considered that if one taxi-car was moved off the main street, all should go off. The matter was referred to a special committee.
