ELSTOW DRAINAGE BOARD.

AWAITI SUB-DIVISION. At the June meeting of the Elstow Drainage Board, Mr G. Stewart presiding, Mr W.'H. Wyriyard, Auckland, forwarded a copy of resolutions which were passed at a" meeting held at Nelherton respecting the draining of the Awaiti block. He drew attention to the fact that Mr J. H. Carter; "of Nelherton, and himself, were appointed representatives of the Awaiti subdivision for' the purpose of arranging boundaries of the special rating area, arid any allocation that might be necessary. He further pointed out that they will probably ask Mr Thos.' Hahna' to advise them in the matter. The engineer explained that even after the areas were' Suggested, it would not be binding on the Board. It was resolved that Mr Johnson correspond with Mr Hanna and make arrangements to do this work. Mr Wynyard -enclosed a copy of the resolutions passed unanimously "at".a meeting of the ratepayers of the -Awaiti sub-division of the Elstow Drainage District, held at- Netherton on April 20, which showed that that .meeting had approved of the. proposals-for-warded to the Drainage Board by-the, Government Land 'Drainage'Department on November 6, 1922, and agreed to the allocation of expenditure as'> therein stated upon certain conditions. Among those conditions were:.That the total cost of the works- to which i they will have to contribute does not exceed within 5 per cent of the sum estimated by the Department, viz., £45,500 for the main drainage works and £18,700 for the subsidiary drainage and roadlng; and to agree to a double road the/whole length of canal If the cost to the Board does not exceed £700; that moneys over and above these estimates required to complete the work shall be found by the Crown without contribution from the Board; and that the Land Drainage Department shall undertake the work; also that an adequate subsidy satisfactory to the Board be obtained from the Government. • ■,',

Another provision stipulated that Messrs W. H. Wynyard and J. 11. Cattor should be authorised to represent the ratepayers of the Awaiti sub-divi-sion of the Elstpw Drainage District to fix the boundary of special rating area, an'd arrange allocation'of the costs of \he scheme with other interests concerned.

The Board approved contents of the letter received from Mr Wynyard.
