GOOD FRIDAY.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —May I offer you my congratulations and thanks for the excellent sub-leader on the above subject which appeared in your issue of Wednesday last. Many of those who profess and call themselves Christians are, I am sure, grateful to you for the fearless lead you have given. In the Wairarapa, more than a year ago, an effort was made, not without success, to lead sportsmen to consider the inconsistency of absolutely prohibiting sports gatherings and secular entertainments on Anzac Day, while bowling tournaments, cricket matches and picture shows are complacently allowed on Good Friday. Last Anzac Day, in the Waikato, even some of the dairy factories were closed —an unheard of thing. It seemed to ine,’ at the time, that our sense of humour, if not our sense of reverence and brotherliness, should have saved us from so scrupulously observing the local day as a holy day, while we treated the universal day as a mere holiday. In the south, the press had to be won over to taking this matter up, and I am proud to think that our local paper has so boldly and appealingly given a lead. I trust, Sir, that you "will not let Ihc mailer drop. The logic of the popular attitude is that the sacrifice of Anzac is of more importance than the Sacrifice of Calvary, tiuod absurdum est. —I am, etc., N E. M. COWIE. The Vicarage, Hamilton, March 0, 1923.
