Equestrian Sports.

The Te Mata Equestrian Sports were held at Kauroa on January 29, under perfect weather conditions, when a large crowd gathered together from all parts of the district. Mr J. Chitty, of Hamilton, acted as judge. During the afternoon the Raglan Town Band, under the baton of Mr H. Salmon, gave numerous selections. The day finished up with an enjoyable dance in the Te Mata Hall in the evening.

Lawn Tennis.

A team from the Raglan Tennis Club journeyed out to Okete to play a match with the Okete Club on the private court of Mr and Mrs H. A. Wallis, the visitors sustaining a severe defeat, no doubt owing to not being used to a grass court. During the day refreshments were provided by the ladies of the home team. At the conclusion of play speeches were made by Mr H. A. t Wallis, president of the Okete Club, i and Mr J. O’Sullivan, captain of the Raglan team; The match scores were ? Okete, 8 sets 71 games; Raglan, 5 sets 64 games. - Oounty Matters. Mr Campbell Johnstone, chairman of the Raglan County Council, addressed the ratepayers■ in' the Waitetuna schoolroom on Saturday last on the subject of the £4OOO loan for the lipkeep of the-main metalled road, but to the short' notice very few ratepayers were present-. Mr -Johnstone'Stated that if the loan were carried it would mean an extra rate of in the £; but that if the expenditure had to come out of rates it would mean . Id in the £, thereby making it abundantly clear to al) present that the loan was the lesser of the two evils. *

Some discussion' took place about putting up a toli-gate to catch the outside traffic. Mr Johnstone staled the Council had applied for permission to erect a toll-gate, but that the Government were adverse to it and the Minister had refused his consent. The chairman could not say for certain whether the Government would subsidise the loan or not, but thought there might be a chance of its doing so owing to the large amount of outside traffic. He also mentioned the fact that the Campbell Coal Company was quite prepared to do its share of repairing the road where it was damaged by the carting of coal. Mr Wright (engineer) was present, and supplied details of necessary expenditure. Visit of Bishop Averill.

Dr. Averiil, Bishop of Auckland, will visit Raglan on February 10, and on the following Sunday will hold a confirmation service in St. Peter’s Church at 11 a.m. During his visit the opportunity will be taken for him to lay the foundation stone of the new Anglican Church on the properly recently acquired for that purpose.
