AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Auckland lawn tennis championship tournament commenced yesterday at tiie Stanley Street courts.
/ There were no great surprises during the day. The New South Wales ladies, who are competing, won their matches easily, though in the doubles the local pair, Misses Wilherow and Ramsay, played an even set with Mrs Lascelles and Miss Gray. The first set went to the Australians, 6 —l, hut in the second they had a harder struggle, winning B —G.' The best contests, so far as the the overseas visitors are concerned, should be in the combined doubles, where they are partnered by local men. The present holder of the men s singles, A. W. Sims, won his first match, G—l, 6 —l. P. L. Bartleet, who has recently returned from abroad, also won his singles easily. In the ladies’ singles a long and even game was played by Mrs Hogben and Miss Mackenzie, the former eventually winning, 7—l), G—3, G —3. Another good singles match was between Miss Colebrook and Miss McCormick. Each player took a set. and the score in the third was called s—a5 —a iu the former’s favour. Miss McCormick rallied, however, and took the next two games and the match. To-Day’s Play. The following are the results of today’s games:— Ladies’ Singles Championship. — Miss Lance (N.S.W.) beat Miss Knight (Auckland), G—o, G—B, G —3; Miss McCormick heal, Miss Colebrook, 7 — 5 ( 7 —r»: Mrs Scott Wnlson beat Miss McKarlanc, G i, G —2. Men’s Singles. Watkins heat Brown, G—2, 7—a : Page beat Thorne, f,—h, |0—8; Goigrave beat .1. Harrison, O—G, G—\, 6—i; B. Bartlett beat P.
