CIVIL SERVANTS' PAY

PROTEST AGAINST RATES. TRAFALGAR SQUARE MEETING. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, September 2. Two thousand civil servants took part in a demonstration at Trafalgar Square as a protest against the lutes of pay fixed for 5000 men and 2000 women who recently were given permanent apointments after serving in a temporary capacity for several years, and passing an examination. The speakers declared that the rates, ranging from 57s a week for thirdgrade clerks to 70s a week for firstgrade, were from 7s to 27s below the amounts paid to temporary employees who failed in the examination, also below the rates paid to manual labourers.
