GOLF TOURNAMENT
SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY H. B. LUSK. The final game of the South Auckland golf championship, set down for 18 holes, was played at St. Andrew’s ■ yesterday, when H. B. Lusk (AuckV land) defeated Sloan Morpeth (Hamilton) by 4 upland 3to play. A gallery 4of some 200 spectators followed the game, which was played under ideal golfing conditions. Lusk played very steadily all through, but Morpeth’s golf was considerably below the form he had shown on the two previous days of the tournament. Playing to the first Morpeth lipped the hole, and a half in 3’s was the result; The next hole went in Lusk’s favour in 4-5, while the third he also notched in similar margin and advanced to 2 up. Morpeth played improved golf to the fourth, which went in his favour, but Lusk took the honours at the next. Fives were gained by both players at the sixth. Lusk . struck trouble early in the seventh ana never recovered, while Mprpeth, playing correct golf, holed out with a good 4. Lusk missed a short putt at the eighth, which was halved in s’s. Lusk won the succeeding hole, leaving him 2 up at the turn for home. Morpeth’s putting was very indifferent at the 10th, and his failure there allowed Lusk to advance to 3, up. The play of both men was again faulty on the green, ’and the 11th was halved in 5. Morpeth holed in 3 with a long putt at the 12th. Facing the succeeding hole Lusk went out of bounds and forfeited a stroke, a half in 5 resulting. Going to the short 14th Morpeth played a fine tee shot, but his opponent found the bunker on the hillside. He recovered well, however, and eventually holed in 3 to Morpeth’s 4. With the advantage 3 up in his favour, Lusk now had the game pretty well in his keeping. The fifteenth was the end. Both men got away good drives, Lusk also playing a great second shot, which rested pin high. Holing a long putt with his third, Lusk took the hole and the match, 4 up and 3 to play. Lusk showed the superior golf all j through the game, and it was evident > that Morpeth’s earlier efforts had taken the brilliance off his. play. At the close of the match the golfers were loudly applauded. At the pavilion later on the prizes were handed over to the various winners. Following are the scores of the final: — Lusk.—Out: 3,4, 4,5, 4,5, 6,5, 4—40. In: 3,5, 4,5, 3, 3—23; total, 63. Morpeth.—Out: 3,5, 5,4, 5,5, 4, 5, s—il. In: 4,5, 3,5, 4, 4—25; total, 66.
