REPATRIATION WORK

PROGRES SRETURNS AS AT 20th NOVEMBER, 1821. The Director of Repatriation (Mr J. R. Samson) lias issued the following statement covering operations up lo November 20 last:— Employment.—The Department has placed 26,004 discharged soldiers in employment, and there are 302 names on the "Employment Wanted" Register (Auckland 78, Wellington 123, Canterbury 63, Otago 38). It was necessary, during the month, to pay unemployment sustenance in one case of hardship. Training.—ln addition to 1394 students who have been assisted financially with grants for the payment of fees, and the purchase of text books the Department has arranged vocational training for 5.903 partially disabled soldiers, apprentices, etc., and 5083 have completed their courses, and have been absorbed in various industries. There are now only 820 still being trained. During the past month 16 men commenced training, and 109 completed their courses, and obtained employment. The amount expended to date on the provision of facilities for training, and for the sustenance of trainees is £368,819. Financial Assistance.—Loans to assist discharged soldiers to establish themselves in businesses of professions have been granted in 5986 cases at a cost of £1,107,106. A further 13,496 men -have received advances totalling £643,355 for the purchase of household furniture or lools-of-trade, and 3993 have been granted financial ;issislanco in olhcr direclions, ffie amount paid lo or on behalf of soldiefs under all headings being £2,131,86'/.. Repayments.—Of the amount advanced £1,750,461 is by way of loan, and of this the total collected by the Department in repayment of such loans, up to 31st October, 192.1, amounted lo £781,106, or 44 per cent of the total loan advances. Expenditure on soldiers during October amounted lo £22.322. whilst collections from soldiers for the month totalled £38,242.
