LEGISLATORS AT WORK

FOUR BILLS CONSIDERED. THE PREMIER SATISFIED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. When the members reached the first Bill of the session, the Animals’ Protection and Game Bill, they got to work with great energy. They took this Bi’.i and three other Bills —the Maintenance Order Bill, the Banking Amendment Bill, and Anzac Day Amendment Bill—through the second reading stage, and were ready at P. 15 p.m. to proceed with the Local Bodies Loan Amendment Bill, but apparently the Government was not ready. Earned a Rest.

The Prime Minister, after a moment’s consultation with the Minister of Internal Affairs, told members that they had done very well and he thought they had earned their week-end rest. If they worked as quickly in future they would have no difficulty in getting through all the business of the session by Christmas. “Which Christmas?” inquired a pessimistic member, who doubtless tiad a mental vision of a mountain of legislative work that lies ahead of the House. Anzac Day Bill.

Explaining the Anzac Day Bill Hon. Downie Stewart said he was not committed definitely to the proposal to declare Anzac Day the same in all respects as a Sunday, and he wanted the Defence Committee, which included all the returned members of the House, to Inquire into the matter, and, if necessary, take evidence. Ho was advised that the Bill as drafted would not prevent tlie publication of newspapers on Anzac Day, but it might interfere with sales and might require double wages to-be paid in some trades.
