EX-CONSTABLE'S LAPSE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Leslie Douglas Marshall, formerly a member of the police force, was charged yesterday with the theft of 22s Gd, the property of the Mount Cook Police Social Club. The man admitted taking the money, and was sentenced to 14 da>;s’ imprisonment. SUPPOSED SUICIDE. TAIHAPE, Tuesday. The partly decomposed body of an elderly man was found on the bank of the Hautapfi River. It is believed to be a case of suicide. The deceased had undressed, and the lower part of his body was shattered, as though death had resulted from an explosion of gelignite. A length of spent fuse was found near the body, and in his crat pocket were two plugs of gelignite.

CHARGES AGAINST NATIVES.

GISBORNE, Tuesday,

As a sequel to the New Year disturbances at Teraroa, sixteen natives were 'charged at Waipiro Bay with having assembled for an unlawful purpose.' The informations were dismissed. Two others were charged with assault and causing bodily harm to a publican, and were committed for trial. Another native, charged with hitting a native girl over the head with a beer bottle, was remanded to Gisborne, the police stating that it was a serious case.
