TROUBLE IN EGYPT
PRESS OOMMENT. A MIXED RECEPTION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, February 19. The Egyptian report met with a mixed reception. The Dally News says that since Ihe grant of freedom to South Africi there has been no more encouraging evidence of the ultimate sanity and itigaolty of British statesmanship as Uh fascinating story of Lord Milner's mission, and contrasts its verdict with t.'.-o treatment of Ireland's demand fur freedom. The Daily Chronicle says that Lord Milner's proposals are generous without being dangerous. They were conceived in a liberal and practical spirit, and will form a valuable basis for thu f, rthooming negotiations with the Egyptian Government. The Morning Post says a disagreeable truth is that if the British protectorate ie withdrawn, Egypt would speedily return to conditions of slavery, insolvency end misery, from which British administration, British hard work, and British self-sacrifice have been steadily d;Lvering the population for 40 years. It U, highly improper that a scheme fought with consequences affecting th.whole Empire should have been formu • Kted without the self-governing Dominions being represented on the Milner mission. The Daily Express stales that Mr Winston Churchill, backed by a solid phalanx of Tories, opposed Cord Milner's scheme, which was not acceptable to the majority of the Cabinet, and vas doomed to failure. The paper adds that Mr Winston Churchill will visit Egypt and Palestine in March, and draws attention to Mr Lloyd George's speech at the opening of Parliament, in which lie stated t'oat the Government was not prepare I to disclose its attitude towards the mission's recommendations until it had conferred with the Egyptian Ministers. Le also would like to consult the Do-Tr-inions before coining to a decision.
