DISTRICT NEWS
MATANQI. The Weather and the Farm. The weather experienced during the past month, although not satisfying fully the desires of the farmer, has proved very acceptable. Several very good rains have been experienced, which have had the effect of causing a nice growth of grass. The root crop's have also benefited considerably. On the whole the district is looking extremely well for this time of the year. Glaxo Factory. Mr C. Edwards, manager of the Glaxo factory, has returned after a few weeks’ holiday in the Manawatu. During ids absence Mr Robertson, from Bunnythorpe, was in charge. The milk yield.' although falling off as a result of the dry weather, is still reaching a high figure, about 14,000 gallons being received daily. This is a very large increase on the amount received at the game period last season, and gives some indication of the very favourable season go far enjoyed. School Matters. Mr Geo. Jack completed his contract for removing the school ' building to the new site. The job has been carried through without mishap, and reflects great credit oh the contractor. It is expected that the building will be ready for occupation by the scholars in about a week’s time. Great indignation exists in the district over the action of the Education Board who, after letting a contract for enlarging the school, have intimated their intention of cancelling only adding one room instead of the two provided for. One wonders who is the genius who tenders advice to the • Board, for certain it is they have no .conception of what is due to the district, and to continue the methods adopted by the Board in adding piecemeal (o the school buildings is a scandalous waste of public money. When the school was built accommodation yvfras provided for 100 children, and the building had not been in use two months before three classes had to be transferred to the public hall, where they have been taught for tire past two years. Now the Board proposes to put up one additional room for their accommodation. U looks as though a drastic change is necessary in the personnel ot « the Board, so that country schools may obtain a fairer deal than they are now getting. A Forward Move. The Tumahcrc Road Board have at last made a forward move by appointing Mr C. Brown .engineer to carry out their reading scheme. A start has been made on Hie Tauwhare road, which at present is in a shocking state, and T favourable weather continues for some time tiie road will be put in first-class order for the winter. The members of the board arc to be congratulated on the step they have taken. The Coming of Hydro-Electricity. The work of reticulating 'the district will be commenced by the Central Power Board in the near future. Large quantities of poles are arriving, and the unloading of these gives the station yard a very busy appearance. The Public Works Department are also receiving numerous trucks of the same material, and they are carting these out to the various roads along which llicir lines will be taken. Personal. The many friends of Mrs Ranstead, senr., will be pleased to learn that she is making satisfactory progress after the very severe operation undergone in a private hospital in Hamilton. Her cheery presence is greatly missed in the district, and all are wishing her a speedy recovery and early return to her home and family
