leave of absence granted. THE FUTURE OF TE AWAMUTU. AN ASSURED PROGRESS. Owing to his proposed early departure from Te Awamutu to Hamilton. ■Cr. Lawson asked the Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday to grant him leave of absence for the remainder of the term. Gr. Lawson pointed out that it was with great regret that he made the ap/plicatlon, as he had intended to remain in Tc Awamutu and watch the town’s future development, which he felt music come in the near future, hut owing to his wife’s continued ill-health, a change was necessary. It was his sincere hope that the Mayor and Councillors would consent to lie nominated again at the forthcoming election, as ho believed a change at this stage would not be beneficial or in the best interest of the town. With the continued close attention to the affairs of the town by th*c Mayor and Councillors’ wise guidance, the future of the town was assured. Owing to the many large undertakings now in hand, business acumen and training wore never more needed in Te Awamutu than to-day. The town was at present in the mfiking, and with parotid government should be second to one only in the Waikato. The Mayor, in moving that leave ok absence be granted, said that he woull have an opportunity at a later date of saying more on the matter. He thanked Cr. Lawson for his appreciative reference to the members and himself. Mr Armstrong expressed regret at the continued ill-health of Mrs Lawson. Referring lo the work that Cr. Lawson had performed in the interests of the town, the Mayor said that there were too few public men who would concern themselves with the inner workings of things os Cr. Lawson had done for the welfare of Tc Awamutu. His departure was regrettable. Cr. Lawson’s wish that they should continue in office with the continuance of the'development work they had already begun was well worthy of consideration. In regard to Ids policy on that point, the Mayor said that lie would have something to say later after having considered the matter with Ids colleagues. Cr. Lawson's thoughtfulness in asking for leave of absence, and thus obviating all troutde in. regard lo replacing him during the remainder of the life of the present Council, was appreciatively referred to by the Mayor. Cr. Taylor, in seconding Hie resolution, also expressed his appreciation of % Cr. Lawson’s work and regret at

losing him. Cr. Lawson thanked the speakers for their appreciative references, it was with great regret that lie was leaving Tc Awamulu." The future of Tc Awaxnutu was assured if the Councillors of the future watched the interests of the many movements that were coming forward, tending towards its welfare. Though leaving the town, he still retained interests in it, and would always support it. The Council passed the motion, granting Cr. Lawson leave ol absence to the end of the term.
