FIRE BRIGADE ACCIDENT
AID TO THE SUFFERERS. PROGRESS OF THE APPEAL. A meeting of the committee having In hand the raising of funds for the sufferers by the recent fire brigade accident was held in the Council Chambers this morning, Mr J. McKinnoj occupying the chair. The Dominion secretary of the United F're Brigades' Conference wrote stating that he thought it better to launch tJiC appeal among the Dominion brigades at the time of the conference. . ' The secretary (Mr Cross) reported that he would be representing the Hamilton brigade at the conference which would be held at Napier In a fortnight's time, when he would introduce the subject. Progress reports,were received in regLVd to the collecting campaign. It _ was estimated that the sum of £3OO vould be collected on the main street. In regard to the outside areas it was recognised that many of the resident? ..would be reached through the main j street canvass. The chairman said that nothing less than £ISOO woulc be of any use, seeing that the purchase of a house and section was the object. It was estimated that the entertainment, which it was proposed to stag:, would realise £l5O. The various athletic sports fixtures, which the different societies were arranging, wi'l aiso add considerably to the total it is h.ped to raise. Mr Cross reported that the members of the Hamilton brigade were raising £SO, which meant that the men were foregoing their wages for practically s,\ months. The amount was received with applause. It was further reported by Mr Cross that the United Fire Brigades' Association would be able to raise at least £IOO t.wards the fund, which would bring I),e contributions from the Dominion brigades to £l5O. The chairman was of the opinion that the Hamilton Motor Cycle Club, given the same favourable patronage as at its gathering of last year, would be able to d>nste at least £2O as its promised 10 per cent contribution to,the fund. It was resolve,! to forward a circular lelier to each of the insurance companies operating in the town seeking support to the appeal. k The consensus of opinion of. the Btir.eet.ing was that the £ISOO mark would be reached, throng!.' the canvass and contributions from other sources. II was pointed out that the whole of t'ne money would be handed over to Mrs Prince and family. The canvass will finish definitely on Monday evening. A committee meeting will be held at the Council Chambers on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, when the final reports of th# campaign will be handed in.
