"AMAZING CARELESSNESS"
- • ■ #- - OF BUSINESS PEOPLE. A JUDGE'S COMMENTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Saturday. Sentencing John Andrew Riddell, aged 22, on two charges of forgery and three of false pretences, involving £237, Mr Justice Stringer commented on the amazing carelessness of people in business houses. Accused walked into a stock agent's office, and said he was the son of a client. He received an open cheque for £149, which he cashed at the bank. Later he telephoned the same firm, representing that he was the son of another client, with the result that a cheque was sent to him at a certain address, whereupon lie went to another firm, tendered a cheque in payment, and received an open cheque for the balance. "If that, is not crime made easy," remarked His Honor, "it is difficult to • know what it is." He was disposed to put the lad on probation, and make him pay a certain amount of money stolen. The case was adjourned for a week.
