PILFERING FROM DOCKS
BIG INCREASE SINCE THE WAR. ORGANISED GANGS OF THIEVES. SPECIAL FORCE SUGGESTED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received December 5, 8.5 p.m. LONDON, December 5. The London Chamber of Commerce/:: committee of investigation in regard to pilferages from the docks, reports an enormous increase since the war, involving an increase in insurance premiums The losses are not due to petty individual thefts, but to well-organised gangs of thieves. It slates that one shipping company is paying £250,000 annually for claims. The committee asks the Home Secretary to provide a special detective force trained in the way of thieves.
