♦ FIGURES FOR UNITED KINGDOM. RECORD NUMBER OK BIRTHS. (Australian and N.Z. Gallic Assn.) LONDON, May 18. The quarterly return of marriages, births and deaths for England and I Wales shows: Births, 271,082, which is la record; deaths, 137,037, of which 4 037 were due to influenza. The rate of | infant mortality was 88 per thousand, I which is 32 per thousand below the 1 average of the ten preceding 1 first quarters. There were 200,7 00 births and 137,022 deaths registered in the three months ending 31st .December in the United Kingdom; the increase in population was therefore 133,738.
