NEW FRUIT DISEASE
A MENACE TO ORCHARDS.
DRASTIC ACTION NECESSARY'
Following upon the-repotied appearance of a new fruit disease, Messrs. L. Paynter (Orchard Instructor) and C. Cunningham, of Wcraroa, have been making investigations in the Tauranga and W.aikato districts, and find that the disease, is fairly general, having been discovered at Tauranga, Hamilton, Matangi, Cambridge,- To Awamutu, Ivilnkihi, and other places. While not prepared to make a definite statement as to the nature of the disease for a few days, Mr Paynter stales that the position is serious, and it would be wise for orchardists to keep their eyes open, and report to him at once if the disease is noticed. As-soon as the report is received from headquarters i- will bn made public, together witli instructions as to the best method of dealing with the pest. Mr Paynter considers that drastic action will be necessary to deal with the disease, which, if not stamped out, will wipe out the pip fruits altogether. The infection, said Mr Paynter, is apparently spread by an insect. In nearly every case it starts in the bud, and goes down through the wood, causing a cankerous appearance.
