ANNIVERSARY REGATTA
CARf'JHUAL FOR JANUARY 29. BIG ROWING PROGRAMME. The Anniversary Day Regatta, organI iscd by the Hamilton Regatta and Gar- | nival Committee for January 29th, is ! on a very extensive scale, and indications point to it being the most succcssi ful festival of the bind ever carried out , in Hie Waikato. The committee is paying special attention lo Hie rowing events, of which there are eleven on Hie day’s programme, to which cash prizes totalling £lll are allotted. However, this important branch of the regatta is not being permitted to entirely obliterate other branches of sport which come within the curriculum of an aquatic festival. Swimming events find a place On Hie list, while an additional interesting attraction is lo lie a tug-of-war contest (six men a-sidc), for which the sum of £5 has been set aside for the winners. The committee anticipates that cntries for the rowing will be well ahead of anything ever received for the local festival. From many parts of the province where clubs exist crews arc coming, and, further away, Wanganui intends lo be represented, While Wellington may also send crews north. . Among the competitors will be D. G. Hadfleld, the amateur champion of New Zealand for several seasons before the war, and who won from the best that England and America could put in the boat. Hadfleld and White, two Auckland members of the New Zealand eight, which had several prominent successes at Home, will be members of their club’s crew for the senior four race. This event. Which will be over a course of two miles, will be the principal rowing attraction of the festival. The Ladies’ Challenge Cup, which goes with the event, is held by the winners from year to year, and is at present in Hamilton’s possession. It is a keenly-coveted trophy. This year’s contest for the race promises to be very interesting and lo attract a big field. The Wanganui Union club’s senior four, which has signified its intention of taking part, has three of the Dominion eight soldier representatives in its ranks, of which Healey is a well-known oarsman. The committee has all arrangements for the regatta well advanced, and given fine weather a record attendance is anticipated to line the Waikato’s bank at the Traffic Bridge on January 291 h.
