The Afrique was wrecked midway between. Ushant and Bayonne, near the Isle de Re and Isle Doleron, which lie off la Rochelle Harbour, whence the Afrique was making for the open sea through a shallow, rocky neighbourhood. It is reported that numerous rafts have been sighted, carrying rescued passengers and the captain of the ship.
