BACKBLOCK TEACHERS.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION URGED. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The vexed question of special recognition for the services of teachers in backblock schools was discussed at the Education Conference to-day. The ■subject was introduced 'by Mr J. L. Wilson, of Greymouth, who moved’ ’that when a new schedule of salaries is being framed the Department be asked to make extra grants to teachers in out-of-the-way places. One speaker pointed out that teachers going to Samoa were granted a special allowance, and he urged that teachers in backblock schools should also receive some recognition of their special services in addition to what small recognition had now been given. Miss Goad (Wellington) said she considered an education board should be made responsible for the provision of board in backblock schools', end if It were unable to do so another position should be found for the teacher. The motion was carried unanimously.

GRADING OF TEACHERS.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. At the Educational Institute conference Mr Garry moved: “That no system of grading and payment of teachers will br> accepted unless based upon effic’ency and service alone.” Several speakers contended that efficiency alone should count, and ultimately a sub-committee was set up to consider and report on ail remits dealing with this subject.
