BIG GATHERING AT CLAUDELANDS. SCOTSMEN'S DAY OUT. The first Scotch carnival of athletic sports and Highland dancing and music, under the reconstituted Wajkato Caledonian Sports and Social Society, was held at the Claudelands Racecourse to-day. The Society decided to make the inaugural effort, an advertisement for future carnivals, and spared no-pains to bring success. It enlisted the sympathies of many of the* most prominent Scotsmen in Waikato, whose subscriptions to the funds enabled the Society to draw up a very attractive programme and to offer trophies to the total value of £440. Competitors were therefore attracted! from many parts of the Island, there l>eing quite an invasion from Auckland. The weather was doubtful, though for the most part fine, but muggy, and the attendance was un-. usually large even before lunch for an athletic gathering. As the afternoon progressed the crowd swelled considerably, and at the height of the afternoon rt was very large indeed. The actual arrangements were perhaps not quite of the hest* hut this is excusable in an initial effort, and the experience gained to-day i will doubtless stand the committee in good stead for future carnivals. The chief official of the Society is Mr John Gordon, and the secretary (Mr W. M. Keenan), who, with the remainder of the committee, have made the effort for success a gigantic one.
