At the opening day's shooting of the Auckland Rifle Association, held yesterday, at th e Penrose Range, Rifleman E. J. Thomas Crisp, a single man, and returned soldier, a native of England, was killed on the railway line between, Kakahi and Owhango, by the northbound expres's on New Year's Eve. Von Tirpitz has got 900,000 marks, and BethmannHollweg and Helfferich 250,000 marks apiece.
The Now Zealand Country Clubs' Association continues to show activity in regard to the movement for gaining an increase of totalisator permits. A draft of a Rill drawn up for the purpose, and which it is proposed to have submitted to the next sitting of Parliament, was considered yesterday by a number of delegates from racing, trotting, and hunt clubs. Further consideration will he given to the matter at a general meeting of members, which is to be held on Saturday next.
The first conference of the Australasian Football Council held since the war decided to change the name lo the Australian Football Council, as New Zealand has withdrawn from membership. It was resolved to alter the rules, enabling boundary empires to throw the ball in at their discretion not less than 10 yards and not more than 25 yards. The counsil negatived a proposal to allow a played to take the place of one injured on the field on the ground that it might open the way for abuses.
