DR. DOUGLAS' RETIREMENT
HIS SELF-SACRIFICING WORK. A TRIBUTE FROM PIASO. The impending retirement of Dr Hugh Douglas from the position of surgeon-superintendent at the Waikato hospital and his great services to the hospital district were embodied in remarks which were voiced at yesterday's meeting of the Piako County Council. Cr Walters, in moving that letters of appreciation be despatched to Dr. Douglas and to the district representative on the Hospital Board, the latter to be read at the public function it is proposed to tender' to Dr Douglas in Hamilton, stated that they were well aware of the splendid service Dr Douglas had given for the welfare of the large number of patients from the county who had entered the institution in Hamilton from time to time. The county was the greatest contributor to the hospital funds, and Cr Walters felt that the occasion of Dr Douglas' retirement should not be allowed to pass without giving pubbc tribute to him and to his great and selfsacrificing work; in the cause of humanity. The chairman (Cr Thomas) stated that,he was pleased to have the opportunity of adding to the tribute to Dr Douglas,' whi.cji had just been given expression to. As a member, of the Waikato' Hospital Board for" several yearS, he had frequently come into contact with Dr Douglas, who was one of the finest men he had ever met, and as a surgeon, one whose plaie would be distinctly hard to fill. "However, though his services would be lost to the hospital, the people of Hamilton were indeed fortunate that they would be able to retain them through private practice.
