ELECTIONS IN AUSTRALIA

FURTHER INDICATIONS. THE NATIONALIST LEAD. PROMINENT MEN BEATEN. (Received Dec. 15, 5,5 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 15. Returns are slowly dribbling in, without so far much altering the position. If the present indications are fulfilled the Nationalists stand to lose to Labour four seats and to the Farmers' Party two seats in New South Wales, three in South Australia, and one in Queensland to Labour, while the Farmers' win one from Labour in Westralia. Provided the other thirteen doubtful seats go finally to the parties which held them, the new House consists of 41 Nationalists, G Farmers and 28 Labour, as against 59 Nationalists, three Farmers' and 23 Labour in the old House.

A feature of the elections is the apparent heavy defeat of the NationalistLabourites, who left the Labour Party three years ago to suppbrt conscription. They include, unless later returns cause a swing back, the following prominent men: Messrs Webster, Chanter, Poynton, Archibald and Russell, and another prominent man who appears to be doomed is Mr Bruce Smith.
